First Graders Make-Do

Maker Space training for first graders included a thorough exploration of the Makedo toolbox. The hands-on learning experience was engaging and fun and taught first graders about the design process, getting comfortable with both solo and teamwork, and using their imaginations, creativity and self-confidence. Tools included a safe (no sharp edges) steel cardboard saw and perforator, and a safe flexible plastic cardboard saw. They were simple to use and deliberately designed to facilitate the creation of something new from up-cycled, low-tech cardboard. These young builders enjoyed the Makedo training, which required them to imagine, discover, experiment, and problem solve, but which seemed a lot like play!
