This year’s school theme celebrates the universal truth that when we work hard at something,…
Weilenmann School of Discovery has achieved another milestone. The Utah Society for Environmental Education (USEE) has registered WSD as a Utah Green School, and Recycle Utah has certified WSD as a Utah Green Business. We are proud to be the first school in Park City to be recognized for our sustainable practices and initiatives.
As a Green School, WSD is teaching students how to take more responsibility for improving the environment at school, at home, and in the community. Initiatives at school include:
- Eliminating single use plastic water bottle waste in the kitchen
- Using reusable materials in the lunchroom
- Composting food waste from school lunches
- Revamping and increasing our commitment to school-wide recycling
- Reusing our paper waste as Greenfiber
- Reducing idling of cars during morning and afternoon carlines
WSD’s Green Business initiative is a lunchroom recycle station called “Wapiti Waste Management Co.” The station contains several bins–one for food scraps, another for recyclables (including a rinse station for plastics), one for trash, and collection bins for reusable trays, cups, bowls, and utensils. Students train other students on what goes where, and actively demonstrate their commitment to our school-wide recycling program.
Being a Utah Green School is connecting WSD students to their environment and local community in ways that align with our mission and vision. From exploring 21st century sustainable practices to applying science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) to solve problems, students are feeling empowered to design and lead projects that make a difference in the real world. WSD’s Green School initiatives are also providing leadership and mentoring opportunities for students in all grades, and strengthening our school community through a shared purpose.
