Weilenmann School’s 10-passenger van, nicknamed “Moby,” has been busy transporting Middle School students across our local landscape. Moby trips, guided by WSD teachers Cam Raguse and Naomi Kohl, have taken a different group of 6 – 8 students each week to some of the area’s most naturally gorgeous locations, including the Provo River, the Little Dell Reservoir, and the Uinta Mountains.
“Our goals are to help students connect with the outdoors in unique ways and to develop a sense of stewardship for the outdoors,” Cam explains. “It is also an opportunity for students to bond with other students they might not normally interact with.”
So far this year, students on Moby trips have practiced fly fishing, created art projects such as leaf rubbings and watercolor paintings, written and sketched in their journals, participated in fall leaf science lessons, observed the wildlife, learned to bake cookies with solar ovens, camped overnight in the Uintas, and engaged in plenty of open exploration.
Students have had a blast on Moby trips. The opportunity to depart school grounds and de-stress in nature at the end of a long week has been remarkable for them. They want to go every week!
