Lower School (Grades K-5)

Meaningful & Joyful Engagement in Learning

Lower School

Lower School at WSD comprises grades K – 5 and is an exciting place to learn, make friends, and have wonderful experiences. Students see tremendous growth during these years as they build on foundational skills, collaborate with classmates, and engage in rich tasks and project-based learning experiences.

The Lower School program includes field trips, class parties, author visits, special days, assemblies, and school-wide initiatives and events. Students have opportunities for service and leadership, and enjoy becoming more independent learners. In every Lower School classroom is a dedicated teacher who builds a caring classroom community, develops strong relationships with students, and supports learning in a collaborative and productive way. Lower School students also benefit from differentiated instruction, small and flex groups, project- and discovery-based learning, tiered learning assistance, and a comprehensive Special Education program — all within the framework of a close-knit and caring school community.

Lower School students attend classes in English Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies, taught by the homeroom teacher, and also attend classes in Art, Music, PE, and Library, taught by specialist teachers. As they reach 4th and 5th grades, students may continue in General Music or join Orchestra. Each grade spends four full afternoons per term in an extended educational experience in the outdoor classroom.

Traditional and technology-supported 21st century makerspace tools allow Lower School students to participate in projects that use coding, Lego STEM and robotics kits, 3D designer tools, 3D printers, laser cutters, and other supplies. These projects enhance learning and support students’ emerging critical thinking and problem solving skills.

WSD is also part of the Beverly Taylor Sorenson Arts Learning Program, which benefits Lower School students across all grade levels in arts-integrated instruction, giving increased support to project based learning, student engagement, and cross-curricular learning opportunities.

As a proud partner of Challenge Success, WSD is committed to a research-based approach that prioritizes student well-being alongside academic growth. We focus on creating a balanced school experience where every student feels safe, supported, and deeply engaged — valuing mental health as the foundation for learning; focusing on creativity and critical thinking, not busywork; and ensuring every child is known, valued, and cared for.
