Middle School (Grades 6-8)

Meaningful & Joyful Engagement in Learning

Middle School

Middle School at WSD comprises grades 6 – 8. It is a vibrant, diverse, and close-knit community, and students enjoy the increase in independence, knowledge, and maturity that these years bring.

Middle School core requirements include English Language Arts, History, Science, Math and PE. In addition, WSD adds Art, Music, and Spanish to the core courses. Students may choose from General Music or Orchestra to fulfill their Music requirement.

Independent courses in Math and ELA are offered to students who excel in those subjects, and hybrid/online instruction is available in most cases. Students can plan on 20-40 minutes of homework in Math and ELA each night, and occasional homework in other classes.

The Adventure PE program takes students off campus by grade level one afternoon per week to participate in a variety of fun and challenging activities at local venues — paddle boarding, rock climbing, yoga, boxing, BMX, Ninja Warehouse, snow sports, and avalanche safety, to name a few — as well as a session serving at the National Ability Center. Our mobile learning van, “Moby,” transports 6 – 8 students each week across our local landscape to connect with people and places in unique ways and to develop a stewardship for the environment.

Traditional and technology-supported 21st century makerspace tools allow Middle School students to participate in projects that use coding, robotics, 3D design tools and printers, laser engraving and cutting machines, resins, polymers, and other tools and supplies. These projects are integrated into the student’s core courses and enhance their engagement and cross-curricular learning.

Student life in Middle School is rich and full, with opportunities in student government, the HOPE Squad, National Junior Honor Society, dances, activities, community service, peer tutoring, and a variety of student-organized clubs. Field trips give students opportunities for experiential learning and real-world exposure, and are designed to supplement and enrich their classroom studies. In the fall, each grade level will spend two days exploring various sites around the state. Eighth graders enjoy an overnighter to the Utah Shakespeare Festival, plus a service day, a day at Lagoon, and a capstone excursion to Moab.

As a proud partner of Challenge Success, WSD is committed to a research-based approach that prioritizes student well-being alongside academic growth. We focus on creating a balanced school experience where every student feels safe, supported, and deeply engaged — valuing mental health as the foundation for learning; focusing on creativity and critical thinking, not busywork; and ensuring every Middle School student is known, valued, and cared for.
