Shine A Light

When first graders finished their study of the physics concept of Light, they decided that for their culminating project, a party was in order. Each group of 3-4 students used recycled cardboard and created a “party house” containing three rooms. The challenge for each group was to use only one light source that would light all the rooms at the same time. To prepare for the design process, students learned a host of new terms, such as “translucent,” “transparent,” and “opaque,” and experimented with the new concepts of reflection and refraction. At last, it was time to get the party started. Classroom lights were turned off so that party houses could shine and show all that these young scientists have learned.
