Throughout the term, second graders have immersed themselves in a cross-curricular project about endangered animals of the world. Blending research, writing, math, science, and art, students have worked hard to become experts on their chosen animals, learning all about diet, habitat, predators, environment, and more. As the culmination of all their efforts, students hosted an Endangered Animal Exhibit for parents and peers. Using digital slideshows, posters, games, and creative 3D displays, they brought ecosystems to life and shared their newly acquired – but vast – knowledge with visitors. As part of their in-depth study, they also uncovered the “why” behind their animal’s decline and what people can do to protect these vulnerable species.
“We are so proud of our student conservationists,” notes school principal, Elizabeth Phillips. “I loved most how they showed their mastery of the second grade research and public speaking standards by becoming the teachers and teaching what they have learned to their families. Seeing that occur is the best part of our job!!”
