This year’s school theme celebrates the universal truth that when we work hard at something, we make progress toward our goal. And as we work toward our goals, what was once difficult becomes easier. The quote is taken from the writings of 17th century historian and clergyman Thomas Fuller, and was chosen by WSD’s Theme Committee for several reasons:

“It applies to all ages, grades, and classes,” explains Jeff Cohen, Theme Committee Chair, “from academics to music to PE, and all the other learning experiences at WSD, both inside and outside the classroom. Not only can every student relate to these words, but so can every teacher!”

The artwork for this year’s theme was created by author and illustrator Robert Neubecker, who has captured the essence of it perfectly. Students are climbing up a mountain, which is difficult. When they reach the top they begin sliding down, which is easy (and fun!). In the illustration, we also see that when students get down the mountain, they run back to the beginning and start climbing again. Just like our students, when a difficult task or skill becomes easy, then it’s time for a new challenge!
