More Than a Feeling

As anyone can tell you, education is about much more than academics alone. This year, to help our students better engage with their hearts as well as their minds, we have expanded our approach to social-emotional learning.

Our SEL Coordinator, Amelia LePrey, brings monthly Character Education traits to life in the classroom. Recently, 4th and 5th graders focused on self-awareness – fourth graders worked on growth mindset, positive self-talk, resilience, and identifying who they can turn to at school for support; fifth graders completed a unit on accountability and taking ownership of their choices. These are practical tools our students will carry with them as they grow.

WSD’s Librarian, Melinda Long, reinforces our monthly character traits through specific books and discussions. She runs small social groups focused on helping students work through everyday peer challenges. These groups give kids a comfortable space to talk out playground misunderstandings, practice communication, and work through the small stuff before it turns into big stuff.

Because Amelia and Melinda handle classroom lessons and small groups, our part-time counselor’s schedule is protected for major issues and deeper concerns. When a child is facing something heavy, our counselor is available for scheduled appointments, ensuring every student gets undivided, specialized care when they need it most.

“Spreading the workload across three dedicated professionals allows us to deliver proactive learning in the classroom, targeted help for peer dynamics, and dedicated individual support for major concerns,” explains Principal Elizabeth Phillips. “We’re proud of how this team works together to support our students at every level, helping them feel safe, valued, and confident in who they are. We’re excited to support our students every step of the way!”
