WSD students were honored at the Utah State Capitol by the State Historical Society and Lieutenant Governor on Tuesday, February 13 for their participation in the “She Started It” student art contest. The contest is part of the Utah Women’s History Project and celebrates the anniversary of the first woman in the United States to vote in an election – Seraph Young, a Utahn, who voted early on February 14, 1870. For the contest, each student chose a Utah woman, either contemporary or historical, created a portrait of her, and explained why she was influential in her community and why she is personally important to the student.
Bonny Cason, Cora Hubler, Foster Maziarz, Mikayla Hawkes, Tessa Richards, and Elle Cahoon represented WSD, which was highlighted for having the most students participate and be recognized. Their work is displayed in the Capitol and includes such Utah trail blazers as Liz Owens, Amberly Snyder, Mae Timbimboo Parry, Dorothy Poynton-Hill, Betty Miller, and Megan Taylor Parks. Portraits will also be part of an art exhibition at Mestizo Institute of Culture & Arts next month in Salt Lake City. Winners from the entire state are part of the exhibit.
