WSD families enjoyed a fun, hands-on lab with robot races, 3D pens, marble runs, and more on March 25 at “Family STEAM Night.” The school provided learning “toys” such as Indi Robots and Ozobots that supported screen-free coding, and 3D Pens, which ignited students’ creativity and artistic expression. In addition, the STEM Action center supplied 10 activity kits to support the event. Each kit included fun and challenging STEM activities that were also suitable for teamwork – Code & Go Mouse, Tetris, Magnets, LittleBits Code Kit, Hot Wheels, KEVA Contraptions, Code & Go Animal Critters, K’Nex, Snap Circuits and a Marble Run.
“It was such a success,” said science teacher Cam Raguse. “The fun part was seeing students teaching their parents. That was what I really wanted to see.” “Parents and kids worked together,” agreed fellow science teacher Roni Ottley, “and explored anything they wanted. Everyone was busy and engaged – I kept hearing, ‘We should do this more often!’”
In answer to that, WSD is planning five community events during the 2026-27 school year, each one inviting families to focus on a different aspect of STEAM: Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics. Look for “Family Science Night” to occur in September!
